7 Day Social Media Detox

Why would I do this?

So what is a social media detox? I listen to a couple different podcasts which are all chalked full of wonderful info about blogs and creative businesses. There have been a couple times where I have heard people talking about social media detoxes. I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant but thought I’d give it a serious go.

On a random Tuesday, I realized how much social media affected me day in & day out. I wanted to give it a shot to see if anything would be different.

How I did it

So the next morning, I deleted all of the apps.

Twitter. Insta. Snapchat. & of course Facebook. Gone. Taken off my phone & I muted notifications on my laptop.

I thought I’d probably give in by at least day two but I surprised even myself and lasted all 7 days. & It was awesome.

No kidding, I think I picked up my phone & found myself clicking to where my FB app was. I was a little disappointed in myself which is why I was so determined to get through the whole 7 days.

The good stuff

Then something amazing happened on day 2. I didn’t miss it. Not a single bit. So I went on through the next 5 days with confidence. Here is what happened.

1.) I got stuff done.

Seriously. I got a jumpstart on my blog, hit publish.

I completed overhauled my Pinterest account. Pinterest is a visual search engine. Not social media exactly so I didn’t include it in the detox.
Most importantly though, I found my focus of my blog & how I want to share my story.

2.) I took time to sit down & practice my drawing & hand lettering.

I want to be a graphic designer. I’ve been using Lynda.com to teach myself the Adobe programs before I head off to college in January. But I also wanted to practice my drawing skills. Which isn’t that great yet if you’re wondering.

I LOVE hand lettering. It is just so crisp & beautiful. I can only hope that I’ll be able to master this craft one day.

3.) I wasn’t as stressed.

People post a lot of stuff on social media. Most of the time it’s a highlight of people’s lives. With all the noise it can seem like you just can’t keep up with the Joneses. I didn’t get that feeling this week.

Best of all

4.) Actually called my mom & aunt on the phone for their birthdays.

I know. This sounds horrible.

In my defense, we did go to dinner the day before. But usually, I would just pop onto their Facebook pages, say happy birthday! Look I’m such a good daughter.

But this year I called & had a great chat with my mother. We talked about her day & if she had any dinner plans with my stepdad. We also just enjoyed just chit-chatting and catching up.

5.) Decorated for Fall

It’s Fall Y’all! I love this season. It’s one of my favorites for decorating my house. This year, I’ve fallen absolutely in love with the farmhouse style & am slowly but surely redoing my interior décor.

So there you have it. I kicked social media to the curb for 7 whole days. It was super refreshing. As a result, I felt like I just got so much more done & was a lot more productive this week. I will probably be working this into my life more often going forward.

I can’t wait to see ya next time!
